What factors affect the service life of PE pipes?

1. Raw material quality
Pipes made of virgin PE100 material enjoy stable service life. Poor-quality or recycled materials lead to brittleness and premature failure.
2. Operating pressure and water hammer
Long-term overpressure and frequent water hammer induce creep and crack risks. Pipes must operate within the designed PN rating.
3. Ambient and medium temperature
Higher temperature reduces pressure resistance and accelerates aging. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles aggravate internal stress.
4. UV exposure
HDPE is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Unprotected outdoor exposure causes material hardening and cracking. UV-stabilized material or shielding is required for above-ground installation.
5. Chemical environment
Acid, alkali, salt in soil, as well as corrosive fluids, gradually degrade the pipe wall.
6. Construction workmanship
Scratches from sharp stones, improper backfilling, excessive bending, and defective fusion joints create hidden damage points.
7. External loads and mechanical damage
Heavy traffic load, uneven ground settlement and accidental excavation may cause deformation and cracks.
8. Water quality
Oxidants and residual chlorine in water slowly degrade the inner surface. Chlorine-resistant HDPE is recommended for potable water systems.
