How do you select the appropriate PE pipe specifications?

Aug 06, 2026

1. Select material grade
PE100 is recommended for water supply and mandatory for gas pipelines. PE80 is acceptable for low-pressure irrigation. Potable water pipes shall adopt food-contact raw materials.
2. Confirm nominal pressure PN
Choose proper SDR series according to working pressure. Smaller SDR means thicker wall and higher pressure resistance. Common ratings: PN0.6, PN0.8, PN1.0, PN1.25, PN1.6.
3. Determine outer diameter OD/DN
Calculate pipe size based on flow rate and flow velocity. The recommended velocity for water supply is 0.8–1.5 m/s. Gravity sewage pipelines depend on pipeline gradient. Gas pipe diameter is matched with gas transmission volume.
4. Evaluate service environment
• Buried installation: consider soil load and ground settlement;
•Outdoor exposure: UV-stabilized HDPE is required;
•Low-temperature areas: high-toughness PE100 is preferred;
•Chemical medium: verify resistance to acids and alkalis.
5. Select connection method
Hot socket fusion fits small sizes DN20-DN110. Electrofusion fittings are widely adopted for large-diameter networks and gas projects for higher safety.
6. Comply with relevant standards
ISO 4427 for water supply PE pipes; ISO 4437 for gas distribution pipelines.
